For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God." (Colossians 3:2,3)
The gospel
Throughout our lives, many problems arise. There will also be pleasant and happy moments, but even so, we cannot avoid suffering and misfortune. Many of these problems are so serious that if we do not have a clear objective in life, we cannot overcome them. And the worst of all problems is that at the end of life, death awaits us all. We will never know what life is, if we do not even know for sure what is after death.
Here we have some of the questions that all of us who live must ask ourselves, without running away from them.
Why do we exist?
What do we have to live for?
What is there after death?
“These questions are so absurd that they have no answer. No need to waste time thinking about this nonsense. We have to enjoy the day to day without breaking our heads. It is clear that after death there is nothing. You don't have to get so complicated. Let's enjoy life!"
Most people think like that. But how can you live without taking your own life seriously? How are you going to have children and give them an education, without having an answer to these questions? How are you going to face death?
It is true that these questions are very difficult to answer. But if we think about it carefully, following an order, we can find the answers.
The first thing we have to think about is: Does God exist?
To find the answer to questions like: Why do we exist? Is there a reason why we have to live? What is the purpose of life? We have to know first if God exists or not. If one closes in the idea that God does not exist, the only conclusion one can reach is that man arose as a result of chance. If this is so, our existence has no meaning. We live simply to survive. In order to survive, you have to eat. In order to eat, you have to work and earn money. But since it is boring to spend your life working, you have to try to have the best time possible. So we come to the conclusion that the human being is nothing more than a simple animal that only lives to obey what his body demands of him.
If this is true, someone who prevents others from satisfying their needs and does not represent any benefit for society, would turn out to be a useless animal, a hindrance that must be eliminated. In fact, in atheist communist countries human rights have been completely ignored; exploitation and murder have been practiced without the slightest scruple.
Are we a simple product of chance, or have we been created by God?
Let's think about this question.
Right now, I have a watch on my wrist. It is a very precise watch.
It would not occur to anyone to say that this watch was made by chance. It is evident that it has been manufactured by someone with some intelligence. We all know that it is impossible for something with a mechanism as complicated as a watch to come into existence without the intelligence and technology of man. Even more so if we talk about cars, planes or computers.
Now let's look at the human body. It's made with incredible precision, and it has some really amazing features. Plus, it has a life of its own. The same can be said of plants and animals. Could all of this come about by itself, by chance? The answer is no.
The idea that man has arisen as a product of chance has no foundation. The theory of evolution is nothing more than an idea created by people who wanted to say that man is a simple animal, that he owes nothing to God.
God shows his existence through his creation, which is nature. If we observe the nature that surrounds us without prejudice, we can clearly notice in it the existence of God, Creator of the entire universe.
So, Why has God created man?
Understanding the Bible as a whole, it indicates that God created man in his image and likeness, to show His greatness and share His love with him. Therefore, the goal of our lives is to reflect the greatness of God, to receive and enjoy His love and to love Him as well. This is the greatest and absolute goal of our lives.
However, we see that the world is full of crime and depravity. Corruption in politics, injustice in society, deceit, violence… Why?
All evil comes from man. Evil exists within each one of us, and that evil distances us from the true God, makes us rebel against Him, and drags us into sin and corruption.
And why is there such evil in us?
The Bible explains it this way:
When God first created Adam and Eve, they were without sin. He put them in a beautiful garden, in the Garden of Eden, which He Himself prepared for them. They could eat whatever fruit they wanted from any of the trees that were there. But God, in order to teach them the terrible consequences of rebelling against Him, placed a tree in the center of the garden, and told them: "Do not eat from this tree, or you will die." Then Satan came and persuaded Eve saying: “You will not die even if you eat of that fruit. Moreover, God forbade you because He knows that if you do, you will be as wise as He is. (Satan was originally the greatest of all the angels, but he rebelled and became God's enemy by pretending to be like Him. Satan will be punished in the end, and will be thrown into the lake of fire that is hell.) Eve ate that fruit, and offered it to Adam as well. In this way, man committed the first sin against God. As a consequence, sin entered the heart of man, making him a sinner. Thus, man fell under the dominion of sin and death. All men are born from Adam and Eve. Therefore, all of us have sin in our hearts, and therefore we are sinners. Since we are born, our destiny is death.
You have to face the reality that death awaits you at the end of your life. No one can escape from it. And therefore, you should not avoid thinking about your own death.
So what happens when a person dies who has lived as a rebel, ignoring God?
This is man's biggest problem. God, who is Holy, will necessarily punish sin. It is impossible for God to shake hands with someone who has rebelled against Him, because if He did, He would be denying His own justice. God will punish, without exception, every single person who has committed sin. There is a place of terrible and eternal suffering where sinners receive the punishment for their sins after death. That place is hell.
But will there be anyone who can escape death and hell?
No, no one can. All people are guilty before God. Many try to deny the existence of a God who hates and punishes sin, so as not to have to accept that after death they have to go to hell. But that does not make hell cease to exist.
God created man out of love. And although man rebels by sinning against Him, God still loves him. However, while He is a God of love, He is Holy and Just. He has no choice but to punish sinners, due to his justice. But out of love for all of us, he made a way for us to forgive and save us. The most famous phrase in the Bible goes like this:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.”
Approximately 2,000 years ago, God sent his only Son into this world. God the Son became man through the Virgin Mary. This is Jesus Christ. He came to this world to die nailed to the cross. Jesus Christ bore all our guilt on the cross, and received God's punishment in our place. God, who has to judge sinners, punished his beloved Son on the cross instead of punishing us, who are guilty. Really, the reason Jesus Christ, the Son of God, suffered on the cross was to forgive your sins and save you from hell.
God resurrected his Son on the third day, proving that he really is the only true Savior for all mankind, and that all who believe in him can receive eternal life as a gift from God.
In this way, out of his amazing love and mercy, God prepared a way for you to be free from punishment in hell, to be his child, and to live forever with him in Heaven. He promises that everyone who believes in the Son, who recognizes and accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior, will be saved freely and by grace:
"The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life; and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life.”
You may be saying. “It is impossible that one can be saved just by believing. To be saved you need good works. It cannot be true that someone who has done nothing good in his life becomes saved by grace, just by believing.”
However, this is the truth. God is the one who promises it like that in the Bible.
And how is it that we can be saved just by believing?
There are several reasons for this: In the first place, God wanted to save man out of love, and it is something that depends exclusively on Him.
What would you do if you saw that your child was drowning in a pond? “Fulanito, will you be good from now on? I will help you only if you will be good and obedient. Promise it!” Is this what you would say? Surely you would jump into the water to rescue him. If even humans help their children unconditionally, what's so strange about God saving those he loves by faith alone?
Second, being the Most Holy God, He cannot forgive our sins for anything other than the precious blood of His Son. No matter how many tears we shed in repentance, no matter how many penances we do, God cannot forgive sin through it. The only thing that God can accept as a valid price for the forgiveness of our sins is the blood of Jesus. He can only save us by the blood of the Son, and we can only be saved by the blood of the Son, as a gift from him. For this reason, the only thing that God asks of you is the faith to believe that Jesus Christ is your Savior.
Third, there is not one person who has the right to be saved. We are sinners who do not deserve to be loved, much less be saved. No one, no matter how hard they try, can become a person that God considers righteous. You cannot buy your salvation through effort. You can only receive eternal life as a gift you do not deserve, by the grace of God.
But how can we be sure that Jesus Christ is the only true Savior?
The answer is in the Bible.
The first thing we need to know is this: God had planned, since before Creation, to send his Son into the world for all mankind. This plan was first revealed to Adam, and later to his descendants, especially Abraham, who lived 4,000 years ago, and the Israelite people. For this reason, in the Old Testament, which was written 3,500 years ago, there are more than 300 prophecies about Christ: where and from what family he would be born, how he would live, and even how he would die on the cross to save those who believed in him. and that he would rise on the third day. All of these prophecies were literally fulfilled.
Another important thing is that four disciples of Jesus, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, left a detailed account of what Jesus was like and what he said. These writings are the New Testament gospels. It must be taken into account, above all, that these four disciples wrote the gospels just after the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, when people still remembered him clearly. This means that the gospels are not novels, imaginations or stories, but writings that narrate true events. The people of that time recognized them as an authentic biography of Jesus. What we have today, as the Bible, are accurate historical documents about Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is, as it is written in the Bible, the Son of God who came from heaven to save us, who died for our sins and who rose on the third day, defeating the power of death. Through the gospels, we can come to know and believe in Jesus. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not only testified by the Bible, but also by history. There is no doubt that the death of Jesus Christ on the cross was a historical fact, but there is also another very significant fact: just after the death of Jesus, hundreds of his disciples began to declare that they had seen the risen Jesus, and it arose in Jerusalem a church where thousands of people gathered who believed in Jesus as God and Savior.
And more importantly, those who did not believe in the resurrection of Jesus said that the disciples must have stolen the corpse of Jesus. That is, even they claimed that the tomb had been left empty. How could the tomb be empty? One of two things: either Jesus was truly resurrected, or the disciples stole his body. But, can there be someone capable of putting his life in danger to communicate to the world something that he knows to be a lie, and die? The answer is no. History attests that Jesus' disciples sincerely loved and believed in Him. Christ is truly risen.
Now we quote the words of the apostle Paul:
“Furthermore, I declare to you, brothers, the gospel that I have preached to you, which you also received, in which you also continue; by which also, if you hold fast the word that I have preached to you, you are saved, if you did not believe in vain.
For first of all I taught you what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures; and that he appeared to Cephas (Peter), and then to the twelve. Later he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at the same time, many of whom are still alive, and others already asleep. Then he appeared to James; then to all the apostles; and to the last of all, as to an abortive, it appeared to me.”
Without a doubt, Jesus Christ is the true Savior. He is your Savior. We sincerely hope that you will accept and believe in Him, and be saved through Him.
“He who is thirsty, come; and whoever wishes, take the water of life freely.”
